Dwellbeing: 7 Tips for a Dorm Room Sanctuary Posted on August 30th, 2014 by

VtWith the start of a new school year, here are seven tips to help your dorm help you!

  1. Bed: Zzzz… Use your bed for sleep, not for study. Make a habit of studying elsewhere so your body is trained to recognize your bed as a place for sleep.
  1. Light: Create a dark room and tell your body to go to sleep—regardless of your roommate’s sleep schedule. Wear an eye mask to block out unwanted light, and keep electronic devices (yes, even your iPhone) away from your bed to avoid light and electropollution.
  1. Green: Decorate with a plant to reduce stress levels, clean the air, and brighten your mood.
  1. Cleanliness: Study break! Nothing helps to banish frazzle like a clean room, so set aside 15 minutes each week to keep your room (and your mind) clutter-free.
  1. Soothing Scents:Aromatics are one of the best and quickest ways to de-stress. When we smell something we like, it can calm the moment and allow us to think clearly. Spray your linens with lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood to relax.
  1. Your Space: Regardless of how big or small your room is, reserve floor space big enough for you to sit cross-legged—that is “your space.” A corner of the room works perfectly. Place a cushion or small matt to sit on and decorate according to what defines a quiet, peaceful space for you. Only use the space when you need to clear your mind, or sit and be still. In the chaos of college life, even 5 minutes can help you stay centered and focused.
  1. Desk: Make your room “yours” without going overboard. An overly decorated room can overwhelm the senses instead of provide peace. Decorate with items of meaning, inspiration, and personalization. And make sure your desk only includes what you need for work and inspiration. A clean workspace is an efficient and friendly workspace.

Make that dorm room yours, make it support your dwellbeing, and have a great school year!
